Going on holiday and driving your car, motorhome or van to or through the Czech Republic? This means you will be using the Czech road infrastructure. As of 2021, you will need a digital toll vignette, also known as a motorway vignette Czech Republic, autovignette Czech Republic, or Czech vignette. Make sure you arrange this well in advance to avoid unnecessary delays to your journey.
Light vehicles (cars, caravans and motorhomes up to 3500kg) can meet the toll requirement by purchasing an e-vignette. For heavy vehicles, the toll will be tracked by the MYTO box and subsequently calculated. Motorcyclists are exempt from tolls and do not need a toll vignette. Tolls in the Czech Republic are really quite straightforward.
Where is the best place to buy a toll vignette Czech Republic? You can buy your vignette Czech Republic in the UK, but some buy their vignette Czech Republic in Germany or even close to the border crossing. The fact is that you will always need a valid e-vignette for the toll roads in the Czech Republic. Otherwise, you risk receiving a hefty fine.
Therefore, we recommend getting the right e-vignette in advance, preferably well before you leave for your trip to the Czech Republic. Below, you will find all of the available vignettes and how to apply for them. Our convenient ordering tool will also immediately show you which type of e-vignette you need. This means you can hop into your car without a care in the world. Have a relaxing journey!

In the UK, there are very few tolls. The occasional bridge or tunnel may require a toll, but, in general, the roads are ‘free’. After all, that is what we pay road tax for! This is not the case in the Czech Republic, where approximately 90% of all national and regional roads are subject to tolls!
Occasionally, short stretches of a motorway are exempt from the toll. For the roads starting at the German border, a vignette is always mandatory. The Czech motorways leading to Prague are all toll roads. Are you travelling from the UK to the Czech Republic through Germany or Austria? Then you cannot avoid buying a toll vignette for the Czech Republic. In addition, you also need to have toll vignettes for Germany and Austria, and possibly environmental stickers as well. Consider this ahead of time!
It is easy to identify the toll roads by the road signs showing the motorway symbol, which is the same as in our country. Toll-free roads or sections can be identified by signs reading “Bez Poplatku” (no toll) or showing a crossed-out vignette. The map below indicates all Czech toll roads.
Since it is almost impossible to avoid toll roads, we recommend always buying a vignette or using a toll box. By doing so, you know that you are not risking a fine.
The Czech vignette requirement (dálnicní známka) applies only to four-wheeled motor vehicles and trailers. There are different types of vignettes for these vehicles. A distinction is made between vehicles over and under 3500kg. For vehicles up to 3500kg, you will select either the standard rate or the extra-cheap eco-rate, depending on your vehicle. The eco-rate applies only to vehicles that run on natural gas or biomethane.
The cost of the e-vignette Czech Republic depends on three considerations:
Rates for motor vehicles up to 3500kg
Rate |
10 days |
1 month |
1 year |
Standard rate |
€ 19,95 |
€ 25,95 |
€ 109,95 |
Eco-rate |

€ 15,50 |
€ 50,00 |
You can purchase Czech e-vignettes for a duration of 10 days, 1 month or 1 year. Hence, your travel duration and travel frequency will determine the vignette you need. If you are travelling for about a week, the 10-day vignette is the most suitable. If you are passing through and will be returning later, the monthly vignette is often the cheapest choice. And if you visit the Czech Republic several times a year, then the annual vignette is obviously the best option.
Not sure which one to choose? By using the tool in our ordering process, you can quickly determine which e-vignette is the best deal for you. It’s as simple as that!
Which vehicles require an e-vignette?
A toll vignette (dalnici známka) is required for automobiles, vans and motorhomes with a maximum weight of 3500kg. Motorcyclists are not required to purchase a toll vignette, nor do you need a separate vignette for a trailer. Vehicles with a total weight of more than 3500kg (including heavy motorhomes!) are charged a toll per kilometre. This is recorded and collected using an electronic box via GPS. You will need to apply for such a box well in advance. We are unable to do this for you, but you can find more information at https://mytocz.eu/en or mytocz.com.
A reduced rate of 50% applies to vehicles running on natural gas or biomethane. And vehicles that emit less than 50g/km CO2 are eligible for an exemption from the toll. You can read about and request this at edalnice.cz/en/exempt-vehicles.
You can purchase an e-vignette for the Czech Republic in different ways. Such as at the Czech toll authority or in a few places near border crossings. But it is also possible to order it online in advance. This can be done safely and conveniently through a trusted intermediary. We will outline the various possibilities below.
Do you want to buy your e-vignette on the way? You can do this at petrol stations in Germany or just across the border in the Czech Republic. You can also buy a digital vignette from dedicated terminals at Ceska Posta shops, the Czech Post Office. However, in these instances, you will usually need a credit card. You will also need to take opening hours and occasionally long queues into account. If you want to avoid the hassle, it is best to arrange your vignette in advance. It is so simple and easy to do it online!
You can arrange a lot of things at the ABTA before you travel or leave for your holiday. But you cannot obtain an e-vignette for the Czech Republic there. Therefore, we recommend that you arrange this using evignette.co.uk, which is very quick and easy.
More and more people choose to purchase their vignette Czech Republic online at evignette.co.uk. The ordering process is not only quick but also very simple. You don’t need to speak any other languages because our website is in plain English. Just fill in a few details, then check out, and everything will be taken care of immediately. We do charge a small fee for this, but this way, you are certain that you have arranged the correct toll vignette well in advance. At least you will not have to worry about this on your holiday!
Ordering involves a few simple steps. After your application and payment of the e-vignette Czech Republic, we will require your licence plate number and some personal information. As soon as we receive approval, you will be automatically registered with the Czech toll agency as the owner of the e-vignette. Your licence plate is then electronically linked to the e-vignette.
The application, administration and registration of the e-vignette Czech Republic are always included in the costs. In other words, everything is included, so you don’t have to worry about anything. You can pay quickly and safely online using iDEAL, PayPal or your credit card.
Since the e-vignette has become the standard in the Czech Republic, the Czech authorities can now verify the payment of tolls much more efficiently. Through a nationwide network of strategically positioned cameras, licence plates are scanned and verified at high speed. This happens as soon as you cross the border into the Czech Republic. Are you the owner of a vehicle that does not have a valid e-vignette? If so, this is immediately revealed in the registration system, and you can expect a fine of up to €750. And thanks to international agreements, this fine is indeed being collected! Didn’t pay on time? Then you can expect substantial surcharges...
Are you travelling to the Czech Republic in a rental car? Then pay attention to whether the toll has already been arranged! If you rent a car in the Czech Republic, the toll vignette is usually included. However, it is important to verify this in advance! If the rental car is registered in another country, the toll vignette will rarely be arranged by the rental company, so you will have to do it yourself. It is therefore recommended that you always consult your rental company first.
