Vignette Croatia—do I need a toll vignette for Croatia?

Many travellers and holidaymakers would like to buy their Croatia vignette online at evignette.co.uk. Unfortunately, this possibility does not exist for Croatia. The ABTA does not offer this service either, and along the motorway, you can only pay in cash or buy a special toll badge.

You pay the tolls en route

As soon as you reach the border with Croatia, you have to start thinking about the tolls in the country. There are two ways to pay the toll: in cash at the toll booths or via a dedicated electronic toll badge. At toll booths, you can pay in kunas (the Croatian currency) or euros. This is only possible at manned toll booths, so make sure you line up in the right queue. If not, you will lose valuable time waiting! In addition, most credit cards are accepted, so you can pay by card as well. Change is usually given in kunas, even if you paid in euros.

You can also choose a toll badge (the Elektronicka Naplata Cestarine, or ENC for short). This gives you a 20% discount on the current tolls. It also makes it easier to pass through in heavy traffic without having to wait in long queues. It is therefore cheaper and also adds to the feeling of being on holiday! You can purchase the toll badge at the toll stations, where it will be electronically linked to your vehicle. Please note that this badge is, strangely enough, not valid for the A2, for which you need a Karta 40 or an AZM. More information can be found at azm.hr and hac.hr/en/toll/etc.

Toll roads Croatia—which roads are subject to tolls?

The toll system in Croatia is fairly simple: all motorways are toll roads, except for the motorway around the capital Zagreb. You pay a toll for each section you use on these motorways, however short the journey. The toll is levied by different authorities, sometimes nationwide and sometimes a specific region, such as Istria. Consequently, it is not very organised, but you can find all the information on various Croatian websites. So, with a bit of research, you will always manage to find the information you need.

In general, the toll applies to all motor vehicles, i.e., motorbikes, cars, motorhomes, caravans, vans, trailers, trucks, buses and other heavy traffic. ATTENTION: unlike in many other countries, motorbikes also have to pay tolls in Croatia!

The map below indicates all Croatian toll roads.

Some sections are toll-free

The toll does not apply to all motorways in Croatia. There are a few exceptions. No toll is required for the following routes:

Toll roads Croatia—inspections and fines

As you can only buy your toll badge at tollbooths or pay the toll Croatia, it will be very difficult to get on the motorway without paying any toll. Thus, the chances of driving “illegally” on Croatia’s toll roads are pretty slim. However, there are, of course, regular inspections to ensure that every traveller has indeed paid the toll. Did you not do this? Then a serious fine will follow. You will usually have to pay these on the spot, so never leave home without some Croatian cash on you!
